Two U.S. Supreme Court decisions are threatening American democracy:
Buckley v. Valeo (decided in 1976) said political campaign spending is a form of “free speech,” so it cannot be limited by law. This privileges the wealthy few over the rest of us in the political process.
Citizens United v. FEC (decided in 2010) said corporations have the same constitutional rights as people. The ruling opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate spending and extended a corporate veto over many of our laws designed to protect the public interest.
Both decisions are deeply wrong. They undermine the constitutional promise of political equality for all and government of, by, and for the people.
To restore democracy to America, we the people must now amend the U.S. Constitution again, as we’ve done 27 times before.
To overturn Buckley, we need an amendment that restores our government’s authority to limit campaign spending.
To overturn Citizens United, we need an amendment to make it clear that corporations are not people with constitutional rights.
Together, we can bring back America.
